A great and gripping novel about the American Civil War in 1864. Union general William Sherman leads his troops on a mad and devastating march through Georgia and the Carolinas. In his wake ten thousands of freed slaves or homeless whites. Horribly lifelike, depressingly authentic - and beautifully written in Doctorow´s strong and poetic prose.
