“I’ve gone. I’ve never seen the water, so I’ve gone there. Don’t worry, I’ve left you the truck. I can walk. I will try to remember to come back. Yours (always), Etta.”

Etta has dementia and wants to fulfil her greatest wish. She wants to see the sea. So one day she leaves her home and starts to walk towards the sea. She leaves her friend Russell, her husband Otto and her home.

The book is divided into two storylines. On the one side the story is told how Etta got to know Otto and Russell. It takes place during the Second World War. The other plotline takes place in the present and tells the story how Etta walks towards the sea.

The book is not only divided into two plotlines, but it is also divided into different narrating angles. The story is told from Etta’s, Otto’s and Russell’s view. This was a little bit confusing to me. The chapters start from different point of views and take place in different times. As reader you do not always know who is telling the story and in which plotline the action takes place.

The language is adapted to the particular situation. Because of this the language is very simple and the sentences are very short and childlike. It fits the book and Etta’s dementia. However, I did not like the language. Because of it I just could not get into the story.

All in all, I missed some action in the book, I found the changes of perspectives irritating and the language was not my favourite style. I tried to read the book but after three quarters I just could not motivation me any longer to read the book. So in the end I quit reading the story and started reading a different book. I have to mention that this was the first time I ever quit reading a book. It might not be a bad book but I did not like it.
