I have never been to New Zealand. But after reading this book I would really like to go. However, this book is definietly too heavy in its content and choice of language to be considered a travel book. The relationship of a woman, a mute child and his foster dad is overshadowed by each character's dark side and too much alcohol .I was fascinated from the 10th page onwards and then could not stop reading. And when I was done, I could have simply started all over again as this book is so well constructed and rich of details.

When reading the first pages, I didn't understand what was happening in the prologue and was taken aback by the language it was written in. I started again after a few days, this time with more time on my hands. I was absolutely in love with the book. The language is great and different. I also have to admit that it took me the first half of the book to notice the translation of the maori phrases in the back :) - obviously it wasn't a problem...
The story is catching, although a tiny bit long in some parts in the end.
All in all: the book made me fall in love with it and never let me go.

new zealand. a woman, a boy and his foster dad, all three of them with problems - two of them being alcohol and love. they meet by chance, and can offer each other something which cannot be put into words easily. it is not love nor help nor simple friendship. all have experienced a terrible loss, solitude and uncertainness along the way. all three are struggling with life in their own way.
the often unconventional use of language and narrative voice as well as the interwoven maori spirit make the book a worthwile read. it is a book full of beauty and terror alike.
