Sammy Keyes has to serve some junior high detention time. She is very happy that her grandmother has arranged that she can work off her detention time by helping Father Mayhew at St. Mary's as she likes him and his carrot-eating dog Gregory as well as the charming singing nuns who came to help with the Thanksgiving food drive. However, when Father Mayhew's cross is stolen, she soon becomes his prime suspect and has to switch to the soup kitchen with not-so-charming Sister Josephine. Suddenly, among the people lining up at the soup kitchen, she spots a girl of her age she remembers having seen at the time of the robbery in church... I enjoyed reading this mystery very much. It is certainly easy to guess who the thief might be but the story is so much more than a mystery, it is a very warm-hearted tale with quaint characters and some quite funny scenes. Sammy Keyes is a friendly girl who doesn't take herself too seriously and who finds unconventional solutions for situations where others would just sigh and say that there is nothing one could do. For me it was a pleasure to read about her (mis)adventures and I will certainly read more books of this series if I manage to get my hands on them.
