I am a huge fan of the "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency"-series, so I just had to buy this latest volume, the 15th to date. And I have not been disappointed! This time, there are two cases occupying Mma Ramotswe's attention. Firstly, Mma Makutsi and her prospective restaurant. Mma Ramotswe's former secretary is determined to make something out of her life; she has bought a house and wants to open a restaurant / café. Of course, the reader understands the allusions the author makes from chapter to chapter! The whole thing cannot end but disastrous. But as always in Botswana, there are people to help you when you are down and out. In the end, everything will have turned out for the best. The second case is about a woman with loss of memory. Or has she really lost her memory? Mma Ramotswe has her doubts on this. Deftly, she digs into the mysterious woman's past. And what she finds, is a truly heart-wrenching story... This book really made my day; not only because of the two above mentioned case stories, but because of the many, many allusions to former books, and because of the "running gags" the dedicated reader will discover from chapter to chapter. We learn about the future of good-for-nothing apprentice Charlie; Mma Makutsi's "talking shoes" play an important part; and as always, Mma Potokwani and Mr. J. L. B. Matekoni have their allotted comic roles. Oh, and not to forget Mma Makutsi's arch-enemy, Violet Sephoto...! As always, you would have to read this book with a pen in hand. There are so many beautiful sentences, aphorisms, mottoes, and wistful depictions of people's characters. You can re-read this book any time, just for the pleasure of warmth and wisdom. I am already looking forward to volume 16, which is due to appear soon.
