Rezension zu "Shiny!" von Amy Lane

Cute story, bit contrived plot but awesome dynamic
Sakukovor 10 Monaten

Kenny has a shitty day. He surprises his live-in boyfriend having sex with a stranger, and they even used his sex toys. After he's thrown out both of the guys, he also throws out all his toys.
Will has an equally shitty day. He gets fired from his teacher position at a christian school, because he let's the children read Harry Potter. Then he also gets into a quarrel with his wanna-be girlfriend and mows down a trashcan with his car in the progress.

So Kenny and Will meet over a spilled can of various sex toys and go out to commiserate on their lot in life. They become best friends, but Will figures out he might not be as straight as he thought and Kenny finds out he has a crush on his new straight bestie.

This is a cute book, but admittedly, the plot is mostly driven by a collection of really contrived, silly situations, as hinted above. Some like it, some don't, but it is funny, light and cheesy. It's what I wanted at this point.

But the book really shines (puny intended) during the more quiet, domestic situations, when the MCs are becoming friends, just hanging out, working on their graphic novel, joking, exploring. I really liked their dynamic, the whole celebratory geeky-ness, being a big geek myself, how they helped each other, cheered for each other. That's the really cute, sympathetic, believable part that I dug most. It stays like that when they start their relationship, exploring their sexuality together.

I really liked both of them. Will is just a big bag of cute bear, bit of a mommies boy, clumsy, but just so sweet and nice and honest... well, bit low on filter also, but that's part of the appeal.
Kenny is a bit more sarcastic and outgoing, but values a tidy, domestic home, which Will adores. He's also slow to trust, considering his ex was a big doucebag. But they work really well together, as friends as well as a couple.

I also enjoyed the frame of telling their story at an aunts wedding. I found it a bit weird in the beginning, since it does contain quite a few sexual explicit situation, and I kept remembering they are right now telling that to Will's aunt and her bride, but they do switch to a more private reminiscing later on, before it gets too personal, so I could push that out of my mind most of the time.

And I always do commend a book for managing to tell about sexual self-discovery without resorting to over-dramatic responses. I liked how it was done here.
