When Gabby wakes up in a hospital bed, her life isn't quite the same as it had been. She can't remember a single thing that may have lead to her getting injured. Her mother is mostly interested in covering up her injured face in make up. And why hasn't her boyfriend visited her a single time? What has really happened the night she ran a car into a tree? Where It Began is a quick young adult read with all the important elements. There is romance, there is suspense and a bit of humour. Written from the first point of view, the novel made it easy to identify with Gabby and understand what was going through her head - a fact that turned out very important considering the ending. Any other point of view or any less insight on her thoughts might have made the book less believable. Gabby's character development isn't going quite as fast as I would have liked but at least it does exist. Plot twists came at the right moments, making me feel like I had to read on because I always wanted to know what was happening next. Combined with a very fluid writing, I had no trouble finishing the book in one evening. My only concern is a lack of proper research regarding Gabby's stay in the hospital. The first descriptions are overly dramatic when you consider her quick recovery and how her injuries don't seem that important anymore after a while. Going for a bit less drama would have done the book good. But besides that, Where It Began was an enjoyable and quick read that I can recommend to anyone who likes young adult novels.
