Underground Railroad

Eine tolle Heldin, die trotz aller Widrigkeiten nie aufgibt und immer wieder aufsteht, auch wenn es das Schicksal nicht gut mit ihr meint.

Swing Time

Ever since watching the movie "Brokeback Mountain" I wanted to read the book "Close Range: Wyoming Stories" by Annie Proulx. I had read one of her other short story collections, "Heart Songs and Other Stories", before, therefor I knew her writing style. Nevertheless, Proulx grabbed me so tight with her writing, it's extraordinary. The different stories are all set in Wyoming. They deal with farm live and the people living this rural life.  Loneliness and love, but also violence and vanity. People's characteristics don't differ. Betrayal, affairs and broken families can be found everywhere. It is not surprising, that my favourite story is "Brokeback Mountain". The story about Ennis and Jack is beautiful. I want to go back with them to their mountain that one summer in 1963, with nobody around but the two and the sheep. Life is cruel, as are the people living it. Homosexuality was not tolerated back then and Ennis and Jack had to try to live around their feelings.  More difficult, because they work(ed) as cowboys, a job seen as very manly.  More difficult, because rural Wyoming is traditional and not open for changes. I rate this collection of short stories with 4 of 5 stars. I enjoyed some stories, some a bit less. Nevertheless, Proulx' writing is amazing and she has become a must-buy author for me.
