A Study in Scarlet is the first Sherlock Holmes novel and I was very delighted to read how he and Watson met.
The book is told from Dr. Watson's perspective as the rest of the stories and I think this is the best way to tell the story in order to be amazed at Holmes' extraordinary intelligence and ability of deduction. I had to chuckle about their men's „WG“. I wonder whether this was unusual in Victorian England or not.

The murder case is very interesting as well. The Scotland Yard detectives come up with a few leads but you know from Holmes' behaviour that they will lead nowhere. I guess this might be frustrating for the reader because I for certain had no clue. But I'll see how this develops when I continue the series.
There was a rather abrupt change of scenery and perspective about half way through but it was an extremely interesting narrative that kept me reading despite my initial surprise.

I can fully understand why Sherlock Holmes is still a popular figure today and it is well deserved in my opinion.
