Rezension zu "Beauty and His Beast" von Bey Deckard
Captain Marrex finds a stasis pod with a human inside a decrepit ship. His ship AIs S1N and VAL free the young human, Juniper. Marrex isn't happy with the intrusion, since he's been living alone on the gigantic ship for a hundred years, feeling too ugly for much contact after his "curse".
But the boy doesn't seem to mind his beast-like appearance and is actively seeking him out and making himself agreeable.
This is an adorable sci-fi take on the old fairy tale classic. It is a relatively short story, so there's not a lot of world building and the plot is rather foreseeable, since it follows the original reasonable close (with an extra helping of horrible sisters).
But Juniper and Marrex are very likeable and sympathetic characters and I liked how their relationship slowly evolved. The AIs, one a disembodied, color-changing head, the other a black cat, provide some fun and comic relieve.
The drama felt a bit over the top, but in keeping with the fairy tale theme and not entirely unbelievable. I very much liked Junipers reaction in the end.
All in all it is a heartwarming and very sexy story (the inter-species sex in here is really awesome).
