Nora Hammersmith ist eine Diebin. Sie schleicht sich in die Häuser Adliger und Wohlhabender ein, stiehlt nur das Nötigste, was diese verschmerzen können, um damit den Armen der Ärmsten helfen zu können, in Manchester. 

Sie selbst ist in Stockport-on-the-Medlock aktiv. Keiner ahnt, daß die durchaus attraktive Frau, die sich im zivilen Leben als «unattraktive, alte Jungfer» mit allerlei Tricks verkleidet, daß Die Katze überhaupt eine Frau ist. 

Es ist das Zeitalter der industriellen Revolution. In vielen Textilfabriken in und rund um Manchester werden Menschen hemmungslos ausgebeutet, sogar die kleinsten Kinder schon, weil die so schön unter die Maschinen kriechen können. Die Fabriken nehmen den Weberinnen, die daheim arbeiten zudem ihren Verdienst weg und befördert sie in noch tiefere, aussichtslosere Armut. 

Der 30jährige Brandon Wycroft, fünfter Earl of Stockport möchte ebenfalls eine Textilfabrik eröffnen, weil er merkt, daß man von der Pacht allein nicht mehr leben kann. Er berät sich bei einem Meeting mit Investoren, wie man dieses dreisten Einbrechers habhaft werden könnte. 

Justamente an jenem Abend erlebt Brandon in seinem Schlafzimmer eine böse, oder je nach Standpunkt, sinnliche Überraschung, als er auf The Cat trifft, an einem Anfang Dezember. Sie küßt und berührt ihn auf äußerst erregende Weise, sodaß ihm, derart der Kopf verdreht, gar nicht in den Sinn kommt, sie dingfest zu machen. 

Beide hegen Vorurteile gegeneinander. Sie begegnen sich noch öfters. Sie denkt, er sei ein skrupelloser, auf den finanziellen Vorteil bedachter Habgieriger und er nimmt ihr ihre Selbstlosigkeit nicht ab. Bis beide sehr wertvolle Lektionen voneinander lernen und durchaus Liebe aufflammen könnte. Denn Die Katze läßt das Mausen nicht und schwebt schon bald in letaler Gefahr ...

Allein schon das Cover der englischsprachigen Ausgabe ist ungewöhnlich, wie die Hand Noras sehr eindeutig auf dem derrière Brandons liegt. Einmalig, habe ich so noch nicht gesehen, sexy. 

Nora ist nicht zum Selbstzweck frivol, sondern verfolgt immer einen Hintersinn damit, zum größeren Wohle und Zwecke der Bitterarmen. Sehr gut ist, daß Bronwyn Scott ebenjene häßlichen Seiten der Industrialisierung nicht ausspart und aufzeigt, was deren unschöne Folgen sind. 

Nora ist sehr sympathisch, charmant, hat eine klasse Ausstrahlung und ist empathisch, stark sowie intelligent. Brandon mag ich auch sehr, der den Spitznamen "Cock of the North", "Gockel des Nordens" trägt. ( Klar, cock ist selbstredend zweideutig! ). Aber er ist lernfähig, scheint zunächst wie ein eitler Geck, ist das aber gar nicht, worüber auch Nora überrascht ist, beweist er doch authentisch Tiefe und Sensibilität, Emotionalität und die Fähigkeit zur Reflektion. Seine Intelligenz kommt ihm zupass. Er ist nicht verkommen und dekadent, sieht selber andere Adlige kritisch. 

Andere Charaktere wie sein Freund Jack bringen ebenso Humor hinein, aber immer angemessen und nie zu dick aufgetragen. Romantik und Erotik sind elektrisierend in den Plot eingebunden worden. 

Das Fesselnde und Spannende ergibt sich daraus, ob Nora geschnappt werden wird und wenn ja, wie sie aus dieser Situation herauskommen möge. Die Atmosphäre und der damalige Zeitgeist der Epoche ist gut eingefangen und literarisch wiedergegeben sowie von der Autorin superb recheriert. 

Außerdem ist es ein Genuß, die schlagfertigen Wortgefechte Brandons und Noras zu lesen. Keiner schenkt dem anderen auch nur einen Millimeter Boden. Köstlich! 

The forbidden sneaks of The Cat ...

Nora Hammersmith is a thief. She sneaks into the houses of the nobles and the wealthy, stealing only the bare essentials that they can get over in order to be able to help the poor of the poorest in Manchester.
She herself is active in Stockport-on-the-Medlock. Nobody suspects that the very attractive woman who, in civilian life, disguises herself as an "unattractive old maid" with all sorts of tricks, that The Cat is a woman at all.

It is the age of the industrial revolution. In many textile factories in and around Manchester, people are exploited unrestrainedly, even the smallest children, because they can crawl so nicely under the machines. The factories rob the weavers, mostly female, who work at home, their earnings and push them into even deeper, more hopeless poverty.

The 30-year-old Brandon Wycroft, fifth Earl of Stockport, also wants to open a textile factory because he realizes that one can no longer live on the lease alone. At a meeting with investors, he consults on how to get hold of this brazen burglar.

Justament that evening, Brandon experiences a nasty, or depending on your point of view, sensual surprise in his bedroom when he meets The Cat, at the beginning of December. She kisses and touches him in an extremely exciting way, so that, having turned his head like this, it doesn't even occur to him to capture her.

Both have prejudices against each other. They meet more often than one would suspect. She thinks he is a ruthless, financially-minded greedy arse and he does not believe that she is only selfless, without further motives. Until both learn very valuable lessons from each other and love could well flare up. Because The Cat will not let go of mousing and will soon be in fatal danger ...

The cover of the English-language edition let alone is unusual, as Nora's hand is clearly on Brandon's derrière. Unique, I have never seen one like this before, sexy.

Nora is not frivolous for an end in itself, but always pursues a deeper meaning with it, for the greater good and purpose of the bitter poor. It is very good that Bronwyn Scott does not skip these ugly sides of industrialization and shows what the unpleasant consequences are.

Nora is very personable, charming, has a great charisma and is empathetic, strong and intelligent. I also really like Brandon, who is nicknamed "Cock of the North". (Sure, cock is of course ambiguous!). But he is capable of learning, seems like a vain dude at first, but that's not all what Nora is surprised about, as he proves authentically  to possess depth and sensitivity, emotionality and the ability to reflect. His intelligence suits him. He is not degenerate and decadent, and is critical of other nobles himself.

Other characters like his friend Jack also bring humour into it, but always appropriately and never applied too thickly. Romance and erotic scenes have been electrifyingly integrated into the plot.

The captivating and exciting comes from whether Nora will be caught and if so, how she can get out of this situation. The atmosphere and the zeitgeist of the epoch is well captured and reproduced in literary terms, as well as superbly researched by the author.

It is also a pleasure to read Brandon's and Nora's quick-witted battles. No one gives the other even a millimeter of soil. Delicious!
