Some of Ben Sedgwick’s favorite things:
Helping his poor parishioners
Baby animals
Shamelessly flirting with the handsome Captain Phillip Dacre

After an unconventional upbringing, Ben is perfectly content with the quiet, predictable life of a country vicar, free of strife or turmoil. When he’s asked to look after an absent naval captain’s three wild children, he reluctantly agrees, but instantly falls for the hellions. And when their stern but gloriously handsome father arrives, Ben is tempted in ways that make him doubt everything.

Some of Phillip Dacre’s favorite things:
His ship People doing precisely as they're told Touching the irresistible vicar at every opportunity

Phillip can’t wait to leave England’s shores and be back on his ship, away from the grief that haunts him. But his children have driven off a succession of governesses and tutors and he must set things right. The unexpected presence of the cheerful, adorable vicar sets his world on its head and now he can’t seem to live without Ben’s winning smiles or devastating kisses.

In the midst of runaway children, a plot to blackmail Ben’s family, and torturous nights of pleasure, Ben and Phillip must decide if a safe life is worth losing the one thing that makes them come alive.

A little too smooth, a little too easy.

After Phillip Dacre's wife died his 3 children have been running wild, and with their father away at sea, no tutor or governess has been staying long. So vicar Ben Sedgwick is roped into moving into the manor and to help at least keep the pranks to a minimum.
Having had a rather unconventional upbring himself, he's content to keep the children out of harms way and trick a few tidbits of knowledge into them.
But then Phillip arrives back home, expecting to be able to just crack down and take charge, horrified at the vicars lax methods.

I liked the story, but I liked Cats other books better. I guess the main drama was a bit too spiritual for me. I'm just not a religious or spiritual person at all, so I was never quite sure what the problem is now. They got along well, they wanted to spend their life together, they agreed on this, so what's the big deal?
It also felt really melancholy, which I guess I wasn't really in the mood for.

That said, I did like the characters, especially Ben. It's really hard not to like him, I'd say, he's so happy, easy-going, competent and accepting. Also, his very practical take on religion, sin and all that was very refreshing, as was his uncompromising honesty. The children are also pretty awesome, despite all the free-running and petty pranks (or, lets say because of it) and Phillip is ultimately a really nice guy too, just a bit gruff and a little unused to any methods that are not discipline. Though I have to say, illiteracy as a plot device I've seen pretty often recently and it feels a bit overdone by now.

The romance seemed really fast and problem-free, though. Maybe that was part of the problem. They where attracted to each other, they acted on it, they fell in love. There where really no big bumps in the road beside all the spiritual things I didn't quite get and Phillips leaving, which I can see as legitimate concern.
Also, those things in the blurb, runaway children, blackmail? That's a gross exaggeration and takes up minimal page time at that.

So, I guess my problem was mainly with the plot. A little too smooth, the romance a little too perfect. Still a very solid and enjoyable romance.
