Writing is a solitary pursuit and I’m a sociable person by nature, so I’m very excited that LovelyBooks is giving me a chance to interact with readers and turn this novel into a group activity. The fact that it’s being published in Germany is amazing to me. I can hardly believe that people in other countries are reading something that I hammered out in a London coffee shop after work, alone with my double shot latte. I couldn’t be more pleased.

The idea for Du Sollst Nicht Schlafen dates back to my early twenties, when I had a boyfriend who barely slept. He felt perfectly refreshed after four hours’ rest, and resented the fact that I was a nine-hours-a-night girl, insisting that I could train myself to sleep less. One day he brought home an 800-page book on the history of human warfare and announced that he would only read it after I had gone to bed, leaving him alone, bored and awake. A couple of weeks later, he told me he had finished it. His not-very-subtle message: look what you could have learned if you hadn’t been lying around doing nothing for all those hours.

In those days I worked for a biochemical research company, testing experimental drugs on human volunteers. And I started wondering: what would happen if a new drug came along that made sleep optional? How would society and relationships change… and what could ultimately go wrong?
I had terrific fun exploring this idea, and tying it to a string of murders across London.
I hope that you enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing it, and look forward to hearing your thoughts and opinions.

The world is busy all the time. Without sleeping it wouldn t be better, because the humans don t know, what the have to do. Work or learn or relax, doing something with the family. What is important for a lucky life??

Wow - I'm very happy, that there is a chance to discuss this book with tge author herself. Since I discovered it in the bookstore, it's on my reading list. The topic is very interresting and I love thrillers. I participate the crime against thriller challenge and it would be a chance to collect points for mythriller team as well.
Many people often say that there is few time and so much things to do. Seemingly the idea of optional sleep would bring about the advantage to manage more things. But I think at second glance the disadvantages become clearer. People need time to rest, to collect new energy. If they don't get enough sleep they probably are permanently nervous, more accidents could happen.
I find the topic very interresting and do hope that I will have the chance zo be a part of this reading circle.

Although the book has an open end, nevertheless, the end of the book has succeeded really well. I do not like personally open ends so much, but one can depict himself also himself how it goes on with the society. I believe, even if the side effects appear more and more, it will not keep most people from taking 24/7 further. With drugs everybody also knows, that they can kill one and, nevertheless, more and more people take drugs.

Many thanks that I might read this great book. I have liked it very much. Here is my review.

A woman was found deadly in the Thames. The young journalist Cynthia should report about the murder case. At the same time comes the drug 24/7 at the market. A drug which makes the sleep superfluous. The drug spreads out terrifically fast in the population and splits the people in "Sleeper" and "not-Sleeper " which are called themselves "Shifters ".
Cynthia is sceptical and resits down to the urge to have to take the drug and soon she recognises that the first side effects appear. The people round her change and the drug has fatal consequences on the whole life and the society.
The writing style is fluent by which the book is simply to be read. I find the subject very thrilling. Not to have to sleep sounds first very temptingly. What one could do everything if one did not have to spend 8 hours on the day in the bed. However, the author describes very realistically which consequences and problems with himself would bring. The central figure Cynthia comes across for me very sympathetically, although I cannot understand her behaviour towards her friend Damien. Damien becomes more and more unpleasant to me in the course of the action. The open end, the feeling leaves to one that something is missing, but maybe there is sometime a continuation.
I found the book really captivating and can recommend it absolutely.

Part 2: Phase 2 and Phase 3 (S. 139-"28)

This part is really realistic in my opinion. People who don't need to sleep start to separate themselves from the normal ones already. You can see how it benefits their work and lifes.

The "Shifter"-meeting was strange. How they admired the rings under each other's eyes, it's almost like a religious cult and not just a subculture.

Even though Cynthia suffers from a bad trauma I can't really "feel" why she's so extremely anxious about the pill. It makes more sense as the story goes on and people that take the drug are acting weird, but her aversion from the beginning was too much. Can't believe that someone wouldn't at least be a bit curious and try it one time, especially since her boyfriend seems to feel great and secure with it.

I really loved the book till that point where Cynthia decides to buy and take Speed. This was so ridiculous it kind of ruined it for me, sorry.

The effects 24/7 has on society and how it reacts to it are realistic and good described. I liked the part with the eyeshadow, where you could see that things that are considered ugly can be "trendy" suddenly and then everybody wants it.

I can't help to feel sorry for Jeff. He's so confused and don't really seem to want to do anything bad.

Normally I like open ends but in this case I'm a bit irritated. Does Cynthis really consider to let society go further downhill just so that she doesn't have to tell Damien the complete truth? I'd like to have known if she publishes the article at least.

I liked the fact that this book was more about the social circumstances and changes and not so much about the search for the murder. It's refreshing to read something in a different style and your book would really have deserved five stars if there wasn't this huge story flaw with the drugs.
