Inhaltsangabe zu „Rebecca“ von Daphne DuMaurier

Daphne du Maurier's haunting classic, read by Emilia Fox Rebecca is widely regarded as Daphne du Maurier's finest novel. It tells the story of Manderley - an exquisite house with gardens down to the sea, its owner Max de Winter and his new young wife...and of course Rebecca. (Quelle:'Audio CD/01.07.2004')

Semi spannend, hat meine hohen Erwartungen nicht erfüllt

Dieses Buch wirkt nach. Eine Leseempfehlung bekommt es von mir auf jeden Fall.

Und Marx stand still in Darwins Garten

Ein Buch, das still vor sich hin plätscherte. Nette Lektüre für zwischendurch, aber irgendwie hatte ich mir mehr Substanz erhofft.

I always shied away from books written by Daphne duMarier, because for some reason I always thought that she wrote old school romance novels. So it came to me as a surprise, that she is actually more of a goth novel writer and dabbles in dark and scary stories.Intrigued by all the praise she received by fellow readers as well as by her biography, I tried my luck with the audio book version of her famous novel Rebecca. The female protagonist is one of those poor needy relations that has to travel along with some well-meaning family member or other because she has no means of her own. When she meets widower Maxin de Winter her luck changes radically, he kinda falls in love with her and asks her to marry him and follow him to Manderley, his huge and famous mansion, after only a very short time of being acquainted. This already shows how freaking NAIVE she is!! Anyway, they get married and move to Manderley, where the creepy and rather bossy Mrs. Danvers resides over the household. Mrs. Danvers also knows de former Mrs. de Winter (Rebecca) and is appalled by the new one and tries to make her life miserable as best and as subtle as she can. While being passively aggressively terrorized by Mrs. Danvers, our female protagonist discovers that there are certain secrets revolving around the death of her predecessor...The story is somewhat forseeable and there wasn't any real excitement, so I can give this enterprise only three stars. Even though they mashed in some nice sound effects/ music into the audio book version and the speaker was well chosen,  the whole story seemed dowdy. Despite of me adoring the Mrs. Danvers character, whom I suspect to be a closeted lesbian, this book didn't do much for me.
