The boy Garion grows up on a farm in sendaria under the loving care of his aunt Pol. His greatest concern is how to sneak away from her watchful eye to play with his friends, instead of doing something useful, like scrubbing the used pots in his aunts kitchen.

His quiet and sheltered childhood comes to a screeching end when Mister Wolf, an old storyteller, shows up unexpectedly with disturbing news. A very important thing has been stolen and events - set in motion centuries ago – speed up to a breaking point.

In a matter of hours, Garion, his aunt, Mister Wolf and Durnik the farms blacksmith find themselves on the road, hunting the stolen artifact and it’s thief. It doesn’t take Garion long to discover that there is way more to the old storyteller and his aunt than he ever could have imagined.

And that’s just the beginning of their adventurous journey through every kingdom and all over the world.

I first discovered David Eddings “Belgariad Saga” in my teenage years and I immediately fell in love. Since then I re-read the series numerous times and it’s always like visiting old friends, comforting and warm. The author has (in my opinion) created a fantastic world with ancient gods, sorcerers, different cultures and lovable characters. You can count on the good guys being good and the bad guys being evil and that they get what they deserve in the end.

I know from other reviews on different communities, that some people have a lot to criticize about this and the following books of the series, like it being too simple, too childish etc. and that Eddings was a secret xenophobe and so on.
Well, sometimes I get the feeling that there are a lot of serious critics (sarcasm out) out there, who have nothing better to do than overanalyze just about everything. I can read a lot into stuff, if I just want to and somehow I seriously doubt this series was supposed to be a social analysis or something.

You don’t have to like it, of course not, to each his own, but a few of those “critics” go way over board with their reviews if you want my opinion.

Obviously, it’s not Tolkien (and I really liked “Lord of the rings”), it’s not deep or complicated and it sure as hell isn’t “Game of Thrones” (YUCK!).

“Pawn of prophecy” is an easy read, a combination of adventure, friendship, humor and plain old fun. Part of it may be nostalgia (nothing wrong there, if you ask me) but I like the book now as much as I did then.

And I’m going to re-read it again. And again.
