Inhaltsangabe zu „California“ von Edan Lepucki

The sunshine state lies in darkness.§Los Angeles is in ruins, left to the angels now.3And the world Cal and Frida have always known is gone.§Cal and Frida have left the crumbling city of Los Angeles far behind them. They now live in a shack in the wilderness, working side-by-side to make their days tolerable despite the isolation and hardships they face. Consumed by fear of the future and mourning for a past they can't reclaim, they seek comfort and solace in one other. But the tentative existence they've built for themselves is thrown into doubt when Frida finds out she's pregnant.§Terrified of the unknown but unsure of their ability to raise a child alone, Cal and Frida set out for the nearest settlement, a guarded and paranoid community with dark secrets. These people can offer them security, but Cal and Frida soon realise this community poses its own dangers. In this unfamiliar world, where everything and everyone can be perceived as a threat, the couple must quickly decide whom to trust.§A gripping and provocative debut novel by a stunning new talent, California imagines a frighteningly realistic near future, in which clashes between mankind's dark nature and irrepressible resilience force us to question how far we will go to protect the ones we love. Good idea with many weaknesses and detestable characters!

Stöbern in Romane

Sieh mich an

This debut by Edan Lepucki couldn't convince me! There are so many things WRONG with this story, eventhough the main idea is great and the writing rather well.I love myself a good dystopy, so the story about one of my favourite travel destinantions being in shambles after a series von nature disasters, leaving people destitute and searching for new ways to live and a new social order instantly spoke to me. Despite the great basic idea, the execution wasn't all that great and at some point highly illogical. Frida and Cal have moved from devastated, dangerous L.A. somewhere into the woods to live far removed from people and all the luxuries we consider normal. At this point I encoutered the first and most grave problem of the book: the two main characters are so moronic and downright unlikeable and I sometimes questioned myself, WHY they were actually together! The second question was: how did they manage to survive for 2 years if they only eat beets, work all day and have sex every day? Cal is a total creeper (he wants Frieda all to himself and is happy alone in the woods with her) who learned to farm in college, but somehow all they eat are beets, Frieda is thought to be pregnant (because if you are mal-nutrient you still can have a normal cycle...) and turns loose this entirely stupid mother-earth-i-need-company bullshit completely with a page-long description about a freaking TURKEY BASTER. The story jumps between their time in the woods and what they did before. The stype of prose is entirely fine but the reason WHY all the strange things in L.A. happened are never really mentioned. Due to Friedas pregnancy (she is three weeks late, so there is of course NO doubt about her being pregnant...) she wants to go explore beyond their terretory to search for other people, because this is what you do, when you get preggers. They finally find a group of settlers and discover their dark secret (it really wasn't THAT shockig, seriously) and just because Frieda is a dumb moron who cannot keep her trap shut, they get in grave danger. What I struggled most with, was the ending. When two people act to goddamn moronic all through the book I want them to suffer, but Cal and Frieda remain in their freaking self-righteous bubble! After all the expectations I had in this book, the frustration I experieced reading it led me to this rather harsh 2 heart rating.
