After a series of miscarriages, Dee-Dee finds herself pregnant again and is determined to finally become a mother. Between her work at a meat-processing plant; her mother trying to bring her back to god; her boyfriend Daddy with an insect fetish and her suddenly reappearing childhood friend Sloane Dee-Dee is hellbent on being loved and to matter.

This book is a visceral experience and I would urge you to check trigger warnings before reading - it has everything from harmful church doctrines to body-shaming.
Dee-Dees character is strongly formed by her strict christian and patriarchal upbringing, which impressed upon her, that her main reason for existing is to carry a child, be a good wife and so on. Unfortunately she has reached neither milestone yet, but she will worm her way through life and do what others want until it happens.
But sometimes her desire to finally be what she should comes through and makes her act impulsively. These moments always surprised me, and I guess the character as well since she didn’t always act coherently or remembered it.
Due to this some moments didn’t feel necessarily stringent, but rather there for the shock-value. If that’s the case it was successful, but certainly not for everyone and not to be taken lightly.
