"May you not rest, as long as I am living. You said I killed you - haunt me, then" Lockwood, the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange on the bleak Yorkshire moors, is forced to seek shelter one night at Wuthering Heights, the home of his landlord. There he discovers the history of the tempestuous events that took place years before: of the intense passion between the foundling Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and her betrayal of him. As Heathcliff's bitterness and vengeance is visited upon the next generation, their innocent heirs must struggle to escape the legacy of the past. The Penguin English Library - 100 editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century and the very first novels to the beginning of the First World War.

  • It's not a romance, but it's a great novel nonetheless!

Wuthering Heights (The Penguin English Library)

Wuthering Heights, the only novel by Emily Brontë seems to be a classic that divides readers into haters or lovers of the love-hate relationship of Cathy Earnshaw and the mysterious Heathcliff.A few years ago, I read Jane Eyre by Emily's sister Charlotte Brontë and I instantly loved this romance story. Soon after, I listened to the translated audiobook of Wuthering Heights and expected something similar to Jane Eyre. However, this book was anything but. I was appalled by the selfish and spiteful characters and the gloominess and deaths all around. Now I gave Wuthering Heights another try and I knew I had to change my expectations and my perspective. Wuthering Heights is a story about love and passion that turns into obsession and hate, a story about revenge, hate and death. Under this aspect, I came to love Wuthering Heights. I could also appreciate the characters much more. It's okay to dislike them. They're not good exmaples of virtue and propriety. I really liked the independence and fierceness of Catherine, which was new to a Victorian audience. The whole plot must have offended the Victorian society I think. There are also supernatural elements to the story, like ghosts or visions, which I loved. The gloomy and lonely landscape of Yorkshire and the remoteness of Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, the other setting, is palpable throughout the novel. I think it fits perfectly to read it in autumn. The writing style was smooth and likeable. Except for Joseph's horrible accent I could understand everything just fine.If you want to read Wuthering Heights, don't expect romance but the opposite and I hope you'll love it just like I did now.
