Inhaltsangabe zu „Beautiful and Damned“ von F. Scott Fitzgerald

Anthony and Gloria are the essence of Jazz Age glamour. A brilliant and magnetic couple, they fling themselves at life with an energy that is thrilling. But as money becomes tight, their marriage becomes impossible. And with their inheritance still distant, Anthony and Gloria must grow up and face reality. (Quelle:'Fester Einband/02.11.2010')

Ein wundervolles Buch, dass in eine andere Zeit entführt. Meiner Meinung nach sehr viel besser als das populäre "The Great Gatsby".

    Beautiful and Damned

"The Beautiful and Damned" is a book I first heard of in a tv show. Serena van der Woodsen from Gossip Girl stated, that this classic by F. Scott Fitzgerald is one of her favourite books. In the series, she is working on the set of a movie adaption of the book. I started reading the book in school, where I was told by a classmate that she once started Fitzgeralds most famous work, "The Great Gatsby" and cut it, because it was too complex for her and that the English was too complicated for her. This would not happen in my case. I love compelx stories and when the language is challenging as well, it is even better. I won't say the stuff is easy. The story is wordy, it is not for everyone and one might not enjoy it as other do. Gloria and Anthony seem like the perfect couple from the outside, but on the inside they have their differences. They marry too young, without knowing each other well. Always waiting for Anthony's grandfather to die and to inherite his estate, they are restless, idle and behave more like teenagers would to nowadays than responsible adults. Life, laugh, love seems to have been their motto. Partying, drinking, dancing. Fun for free, or paying for people's presence. I thought they would run out of money every moment. The story makes you question your own lifestyle. The lifestyle you would have lived if you were born 100 years earlier. Fitzgerald shows where people end up when they always dream of the live they want to live, but never do anything to earn it. His talent with words is shown once more and compensates for the lenght in the story.
