Rezension zu Romancing the Werewolf: A Supernatural Society Novella von Gail Carriger

Droll and cutsie, but with too little romance

von Sakuko vor 6 Jahren

Kurzmeinung: A cute, little story, with really very little romance, but a lot of babies and not a lot of drama, besides curtain choices.

Professor Lyall and Biffy had a short Affair 20 years ago, before Lyall had to move away to be the Beta of another pack.
But now he's back in London and Biffy is the new Alpha of his pack, but immediately there is confusion about babies left on their doorsteps and a new church in the area.

So, I admit I did not read through the Parasol Protectorate. I finished the first one ages ago, but didn't like it enough to read the next one. But I feel I would have needed to, since I had the lingering feeling I misses something in this book. I wasn't even aware it's a continuation of that other series until I was knee deep in the book already.

I didn't mind the book, but got the feeling it was mainly trying to be as droll as possible. There's a lot of talk about curtains, decorations and clothing. Oh, and some whimsical scenes with babies and unprepared bachelor werewolves.
And it's also really verbose and cute, but I felt it's just trying way too hard. It was fun for a while, but ended up feeling a bit forced and one-note.

There is not really much romance going on. Professor Lyall and Biffy had one night together before he had to go away for 20 years, and now he's back and they both keep there distance. It's mostly about trying to figure out where the babies come from and about Biffy settling into his role as Alpha.
There's barely any drama either, it's too stiff and civilized a book for that.

It's short and it's an easy, fast read, but I'd loved to have a little more feeling in there. You can't just live on squealing cuteness alone.
