Amazing

I intended to read this book just like a novel: start at the beginning and then work your way towards the end. However, soon I found it was better to not read it in one piece. This may have been obvious considering the book is a collection of many little pieces, but I never before found such a straining collection. Each story was so demanding I felt I needed some time in between to really savor its meaning.

Therefore, I started reading only 2 or 3 stories at a time and then have a break, maybe even put some different, lighter stuff in between. That way, the stories did not start blur into each other and belittle each other's impact. Of course, it took me much longer to finish the book, but I guess this way I got the most out of it.

I have only recently discovered this author (shame on me), but I've really come to admire his constantly high-level, mind-bending and totally unique work which defies any categorizing. It is a melting pot of genres where horror, fantasy and sci-fi are only the top of the list. I dare say you may find a story touching almost every genre, which makes this collection diversified and suprising with each new story. The writing, of course, is superb: each sentence, even each word has its purpose and you won't find any unnecessary filling. I guess the word condensed may also be a fitting description.

Of course, there were stories I loved more than others, depending on the subject or genre they were dealing with, but I can honestly say there was not one single story I disliked. My favorite story - which I already re-read once and will surely do so again - is titled "Attack of the Giant Deformed Mutant Cannibalistic Gnashing Slobberers from Planet Cygnus X-2.73: A Love Story".

Highly recommended.

Rezension zu "Keepers: The Cedar Hill Series" von Gary A. Braunbeck

Unique

When I chose Keepers, I was not sure what to expect from the book after reading the summary, only knew it had something to with animals. But what the author came up with was truly original and surprising. While I was not always satisfied with the plot, which more than once was confusing like hell, the author did a great job at character building. Gil, Beth, Mabel, Marty - they all became so vivid in my imagination it was magic. I also love the author's writing style, making even slower passages (yes, there are some of these as well) a pleasure to go through.

While the ending finally shed some light on my piling questions, they also stole some of the magic from the story. A truly outstanding novel from a remarkable writer I will definitely keep an eye on.

Outstanding

This was my first novel by the author and not at all what I expected. What I expected was a straight-forward horror story, but what I got was a multi-layered story that can't be pegged as only one genre. Sometimes I felt completely overwhelmed by the complexity of the plot, but the author amazingly managed to get back on track and keep everything in line.

Graves was by no means a fast-paced read. The extensive plot demands a great deal of attention and the outstanding prose must be savored rather than devoured. But patience truly pays off with this novel. I have to admit that several times I started getting bored, but I always felt an overwhelming urge to continue reading, like a strong undercurrent that carries you away. Patience really pays off with this incredible story that will still occupy your mind for some time.

I read the comparatively long after word contained in this version with great interest. It was extremely revealing and the therein provided short story felt like a tasty little refill.
