Darryl is a small time crook with a record for mostly petty theft and charges for assault thrown in for good measure. Ella-Loo is a waitress in backwater bars, trading bj’s for a little extra. Both of them drifting aimlessly through life, until they lay eyes on each other. Destined to be together forever they start their journey to better pastures. Their way.Their first kill is mostly accidental but it leaves them horny, passionate for each other and hungry for more. When the first tortured and mutilated body with a carved in heart containing the initials E&D is discovered in New York, primary of the investigation is Lieutenant Eve Dallas. It doesn’t take her and her partner Detective Peabody very long to find out the gruesome truth. A serial killer is on the loose, leaving more than 25 dead bodies all over the US not caring for race, gender, age or anything else but torturing and killing. When a woman is taken right off the street, time is running out for Eve, her team and the abducted girl.“Devoted in Death” is book #41 in J. D. Robbs (aka Nora Roberts) “In Death”-series about homicide Lieutenant Eve Dallas.I’m a big fan of this series and read all books so far (and will continue to do so) even though this is one of the books I didn’t like as much. It’s not bad, but it’s not really good also. You get interesting (bat shit crazy) killers, an exciting hunt for them and even a solid continuing storyline but something was missing, even if I can’t put my finger on it. For one, I really missed some of my favourite sidekicks, like Charles and Louise or Mavis and her family. A newly introduced character is Deputy Banner, a southern cop who started to pursue the killers on his own time when nobody wanted to believe him, that there’s something fishy about an “accidental death” in his hometown. He’s likable enough and maybe that’s why I had some problems with him, he’s an all around nice guy and that makes him totally boring. I waited the whole book for something, to happen with him. That he does something wrong, goes on a revenge mission or something but nope. Just a nice guy from the south. “Devoted in death” is a solid and easy enough read but not one of my favourites. As always, this novel can be read as a standalone but it makes more sense if you know the previous books.
