Rezension zu Zero at the Bone von Jane Seville

Really intense romance with plenty action and angst

Kurzmeinung: Well written, with a lot of action, angst and live-death situations. Awesome character development, intense romance, completely unrealistic.

Surgeon Jack sees an assassination in his hospitals parking lot and becomes a prime witness against a mafia boss. Who accordingly wants him dead as soon as possible.
D is a hitman, who only takes hit on people who he feels deserve it. But someone blackmails D into taking Jacks hit. Instead of killing him, though, he takes it upon himself to protect Jack, to make sure he can make his testimony, also the while trying to figure out who wanted to make D kill Jack in the first place, and why.
But as they are on the run, them against the world, Jack starts to wear down D's ice-cold, emotionless exterior and they get a lot closer than either of them ever imagined.

This book is a lot more intense than I usually read. But it's so very good. It's really well written, with spot on pacing. It starts very slow, both of them are thrust together and forced to get along to survive. They get to know each other, Jack starts to like D. It evolves into more and it's actually very heart-warming to see how D thaws little by little. It's a very slow progress through the whole book, but that's what makes it really good. It's not to hasty, but in the end there's nothing left to give.
I adored both characters and thought they are very well thought out, multi-dimensional and the character development is just awesome. Even though the situations are totally out there for me, I felt I could entirely relate to the characters.
There is also quite a bit of action and life-and-death situations. Blood, brutality, torture, it can get rather dark. I had to stop sometimes and read a few happier books to make up for it. Nothing to do with the book being bad, I just don't usually read something so brutal. It's well worth it, though. There is also a lot of angsting going around (most of it quite deserved, mind you, considering the situations) but mostly it's really, emotionally intense, which is what I loved most about the book.

Now, of course the plot is absolutely unrealistic, but it all feel coherent and sensible. It didn't scream "silly" or "ridiculous" too me, I could suspend my disbelieve quite well here.
