Somewhere in the US in the year 1996 – a time when only a few pupils have access to the Internet or an own cell phone and years before online social networks. The story of „The Future Of Us“ is told from the alternating point of view of Emma and her former BF Josh. Emma gets a new computer from her father and Josh offers her to use his new AOL CD-ROM to access the Internet. On her first time online something weird happens. After typing her name and password to start the Internet, a new window opens and she has to retype her access data. After this she finds a really confusing website with a blue banner, a lot of photos and lots of „like“s and „comment“s she can’t understand at all. The weird thing is, this site is about a woman in her early 30s, with her name, her birthday and who shares a part of her history. You can guess which site this is, right? Of course, it is Facebook, but Facebook hasn’t been invented in the 90s. The woman is supposed to be Emma’s self – 15 years in the future. At first, Emma thinks that someone plays a prank on her, but soon she discovers together with Josh, that this website is some kind of time portal for them. Of course, they are curious about their own future and those of their families and friends and delve deeper and deeper into Facebook. Josh likes what he sees, but Emma isn’t happy at all. So she starts to change things in her life that cause in a sort of butterfly effect ripples in the future and things start to get more and more complicated. Now, every time she opens her Facebook site, her future offers something else to her, but her decisions don’t only affect her own future … I really liked the idea of this book with Facebook as some sort of crystal ball to look into your future. Although the main characters sometimes bugged me a little with their actions, I was so intrigued with the story, I found it difficult to put the book down. 4 ½ stars.
