Predictable, but nonetheless heart-warming and fun to read

Kurzmeinung: A heart-warming summer read with lots of Italian flair. Sometimes predictable, but that didn't make it any less fun.

After her mother passed away, Lina fulfills her last wish and travels to Italy to finally meet her father. The loss of her mother still haunts her, and she is convinced that she will leave Italy as soon as possible. The fact that Howard, her father, lives on a cemetery doesn't make her stay any better - in the beginning. Slowly, Lina gets acquainted with the country, the food and, most important, the people. Her new best friend Ren helps her to understand the journal her mother has left for her, and Lina uncovers all the old family secrets - while losing her heart.

Love stories of all kinds are usually not my genre. But when I saw "Love and Gelato" for free on Amazon, I decided that this should be my summer read. And it did not disappoint me.

The only thing that I really expected of the novel was an Italian feeling. My expectations were even exceeded. The author took me to Florence, made me see what Lina saw, made me taste the food and after reading I was left hungry and full of wanderlust. However, it was funny to read all these things from an American perspective. Italy is so close to Germany and we are pretty much familiar with the culture and the food, so seeing it through completely unknowing eyes was amusing.

The humor in general is another plus of the novel. The dialogues made me laugh often enough, and especially Lina had some great comebacks and pun lines.

"Love and Gelato" has its very own kind of suspense. As soon as Lina starts reading her mother's journal, you can't stop reading with her. You want to know what happens to young Hadley, and then you want to know how Lina reacts and what she is going to do. Uncovering all her mother's secrets together with Lina was a lot of fun and gave the novel a more complex dimension than only the love story.

The latter was rather predictable, but nonetheless cute. The author doesn't focus only on this part of the story, it's merely a side effect that turns out to be charming. It is a friendly, soothing love that develops between Lina aaaand... well, I guess you have to find out for yourself!

"Love and Gelato" was a little surprise and left me with a warm feeling in my stomach. It was not your stereotypical love story, but contained a lot of different input, and most important - Italian flair. 4 of 5 stars.
