This beautiful tardis-blue book contains lovely and fascinating stories from the Doctor Who universe, the famous Time Lord travelling through time and space. Its four stories written by different female authors are starring four different female companions (Sarah Jane Smith, Rose Tyler, Clara Oswald, and Bill Potts) and, of course, "their" Doctors. I was very excited to see that the fourth story was written by Dorothy Koomson who is also the author of “The Ice Cream Girls”, a disturbing novel that impressed me so deeply that even after several years I still sometimes think about it. My expectations were therefore high and I am happy to say that I was not disappointed!
Sadly, written Doctor Who stories often lag behind the thought-provoking TV series of the Moffat era with all its different angles of interpretation but not these. They are all different and yet all providing much food for thought:
In the first story, "Sarah Jane and the temple of eyes" written by Jacqueline Rayner, the Doctor and Sarah Jane are faced with a dangerous adventure in Ancient Rome. It is a quite sinister story, sheds some light on the lack of power women had to endure in history and, as often with Doctor Who, ends in a quite different way as would be expected...
The second story, "Rose and the Snow Window" by Jenny T. Colgan, was my favourite. I have loved the author's gentle description of ninth Doctor and Rose even more than their depiction in the TV series and yet you recognize them at once. This story offers all a good story can offer: It is suspenseful, romantic, touching. It offered me a more personal view of history and made me wish to inquire further about the events of that time.
In contrast, I have found Clara in "Clara in the maze of Cui Palta" written by Susan Calman, a bit annoying - though I suspect that many Doctor Who fans see her that way, I have a more positive view of the character. Yet it is a thrilling story with a touch of horror and I liked it very much.
The last story, "Bill and the three jackets" by Dorothy Koomson is a real treat - very gripping and showing Bill in all her splendour: very smart and with a big heart.
After the stories, the four authors as well as Kelly Wagner, the illustrator of the beautiful cover, are presented with a short text and a photo - a lovely tribute to five women who made me very happy with this book!
