One of the best books I have ever read! I read it next to the sea on Mallorca, but how much different was the Mediterreanian Sea than Banville's description of the Atlantic Ocean which seems much more menacing and less cheerful. Banville's sentences and style of writing are a great treat: His choice of words is spectacular - so many I have never heard of. And language itself is a topic of his as well. His main topic is death of a close person and he shows us how different it can be. The narrator's wife dying very slowly over the time of twelve months, the other a suicidal death which happens on the wink of the moment. And it seems that the sudden death is much more of a problem for the surviving beloved ones.
