"How will I ever get out of the labyrinth?"

Arguably, John Green is one of the masters of teen fiction. His novels have been translated into numerous languages and sold millions of copies worldwide. This month's bookclub will address John Green's debut novel Looking for Alaska.

Looking for Alaska is the heartbreakingly beautiful story of Miles who never fit in anywhere, his boarding school friends Colonel and Takumi and the somewhat mysterious Alaska. It also shows how just one mistake, one oversight can change everything ... Discover John Green's debut with us!

Join our  Let's Read in English book club and discuss great novels each month. Usually, there won't be any free books but you are welcome to discuss every book at your own convenience. More about the book
Before . Miles "Pudge" Halter's whole life has been one big non-event. Then he heads off to the sometimes crazy, possibly unstable, and anything-butboring world of Culver Creek Boarding School, and his life becomes the opposite of safe. Because down the hall is Alaska Young. The gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, self-destructive, screwed-up, and utterly fascinating Alaska Young pulls Pudge into her world, launches him into a new life, and steals his heart.
After. Nothing is ever the same.

Who's participating?

I've had the book lying around for a week now (lend from the library).

It's not usually my kind of book, because really, I have never been that kind of teenager, but we'll see, it might be decent. I did enjoy Crazy in school.

Do you know any other novels (or films) by John Green?

No. I've only read almost everything by Jane Green... ;)

Famous last words

StefanieFreigericht schreibt:
Ich kenne dann eher zynische Sprüche, so wie die knock knocks, etwas hirnlos, wie: "rechts ist frei" waren die letzten Worte des Beifahrers usw.

Ja, mir fallen auch nur solche "last words" ein...

1st Section: Beginning to 84 Days Before

Not really sure what to think of the first section of the book. It is definitely an interesting beginning with the caption "one hundred and thirty-six days before". It automatically makes you wonder what the event is. The main characters also seem to be interesting, especially Alaska. You know that there is more to her than the cool girl who stores cigarettes. But I can't really identify with one of them. A teenager who calls himself Colonel and nicknames everyone? Did anyone of you meet someone like that in real life?

Yes, he's my husband. He's not called Colonel, but he goes by the same nickname about everywhere. And he nicknames about 90% of 'his' new students every year (he's student council for his study path)

3rd Section: After to 27 Days After

I mean even Pudge is fed up with the grief of some of the other students, but as some of you already mentioned it is a personal process. Maybe someone already had a bad day and the news about Alaska's death was just the last straw. Maybe some were mad at her and suddenly she's dead. Maybe some had always wanted to be her friend and never got up the courage to do something about it. And for the Colonel and Pudge it is mixed with guilt.

Now they are trying to figure out what really happened and maybe also how much guilt really goes to them.
