I normally don't watch the movie before I read the book, but I did with "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close". Story: Nine-year-old Oskar Schell is an inventor, amateur entomologist, computer consultant, Francophile, letter writer, pacifist, amateur astronomer, natural historian, percussionist, romantic, Great Explorer, jeweller, origamist, detective, vegan and collector of butterflies. When his father is killed in the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center, Oskar sets out to solve the mystery of a key he discovers in his father's closet. It is a search which leads him into the lives of strangers, through the five boroughs of New York, into history, to the bombings of Dresden and Hiroshima, and on an inward journey which brings him ever closer to some kind of peace.. Oskar is a remarkable child. His parents probably didn't have an easy job raising him. The search for the lock, in which the mysterious key fits, he found in his father's closet after he died on September 11th, leads him through New York and in the arms of many different people, who all seem to have waited only for him. I was a bit confused at first, with the time leaps and the different point of views. I needed to get used to them, but in the end it all came together as a whole new image. This is the story of a boy who lost his beloved father, a mother who holds on to her son, a grandma who wants to get over a long lost love. Three generations, effected not only by September 11th, but by events from much longer ago. I rate this book with 4 of 5 stars. I love the title of the story and the cover as well, but the content is entertaining, too.
