Shadow and Bone is the debut of Leigh Bardugo and the first book of the Grisha trilogy. In contrast to many other young adult novels, the setting is one of the main features which captured me right away.
Ravka ( I guess this is supposed to be an imaginary Russia), a once great nation, is divided by the Shadow Fold, an inhospitable stretch of land, where horrible creatures live - I have to admit that I am a sucker for story set in a Russian or Russian-like setting so I was instantly excited. It is that very Fold that shuts the nation off from the sea. Within Ravka there live the Grisha, an order of magicians that are heavily involved with the reign of the King and the maintenance of his power.
Alina Starkova, and Mal Oretsev, two orphans who grew up together, work for the Army and one day when their brigade ventures into the Shadow Fold, Alina, who assumed to have no special traits, discovers her hidden talent. She is ishipped off to the King's court, entering a world of secrets, backstabbing and intrigues and feels instantly attracted to the Darkling, the leader of the order of the Grisha. It becomes obvious that Alina has a very special talent which can be used to destroy the Shadow Fold and save Ravka, but there are darker forces at work that the ones populating the barren land.
The book is about love (of course) and attraction to people better left alone, it is about power and what you do with it once you have it and on the whole a very coherent first part of a well-written trilogy that definitely wants you to read MORE of this.
