Inhaltsangabe zu „Seed“ von Lisa Heathfield

All that Pearl knows can be encapsulated in one word: Seed. It is the isolated community that she was born into. It is the land that she sows and reaps. It is the center of her family and everything that means home. And it is all kept under the watchful eye of Papa S. At fifteen years old, Pearl is finally old enough to be chosen as Papa S.'s companion. She feels excitement . . . and surprising trepidation that she cannot explain. The arrival of a new family into the Seed community—particularly the teenage son, Ellis—only complicates the life and lifestyle that Pearl has depended upon as safe and constant. Ellis is compelling, charming, and worldly, and he seems to have a lot of answers to questions Pearl has never thought to ask. But as Pearl digs to the roots of the truth, only she can decide what she will allow to come to the surface. Lisa Heathfield's suspenseful, scintillating debut features a compelling voice that combines blithe naïveté, keen observation, and sincere emotion.

Ein Jugendbuch über ein Mädchen in einem Cult/einer Sekte, eine ganz besondere Erfahrung.

  • Not for the faint-hearted, so good but terrifying

"No one is unhappy at Seed. There is no place on Earth as good as this." Seed is a cult, I don't think there is any other way to put it. It's an isolated community, for Pearl and her family, there is Seed, and there is the Outside. They only visit the Outside to go to the market and sell their home-grown products. They don't talk to Outsiders, Outsiders are evil, a bad seed. That's what their leader Papa S. tells them, and he is always right, because nature speaks through him. Because Ellis' mother is an old friend of one of the elder men of the cult, and looking for a new home with her two children. Papa S. let's them come into Seed, and madness ensues. Because they know doctors and hospitals are not evil and don't experiment on people. They know what Pearl and her family does not know, has never known. They only know Seed. "How do you know what you need if you've never seen it?" This is the first book about a cult that I have read, and it left me with a really strange feeling. Scared for/about humanity, people, and men. About how easy it is to influence someone, how easy it is for someone's thoughts to be stuck, and how hard it can be to get them unstuck. Is it possible that cults like Seed are out there? Are they hiding or do we just not want to see it? Could we help? "They make me have questions I cannot ask." This might be advertised as a YA book, but I'm not sure I would recommend it as such. I am 23 years old, and everything I've just read sits really heavy with me. If you are faint-hearted, don't go near this. If you think you can stomach it, that you are mature enough, go right ahead. I'm honestly struggling for words about this book. I don't think any topic ever got so stuck with me that I can't really talk about the book itself. Yes, the writing is good, the characters are amazing, but the plot, the story… oh god. So good, so scary, so well-done, so strange, so… so everything. For Pearl and her family, Seed is everything. Right now, for me, Seed is everything. And I'm sure this strange feeling will stay with me for a while. "Help us. We are at Seed."
