The Etymologicon isn't your usual dictionary of etymology. You won't find an alphabetical list of words and boring, scientific explanations. Mark Forsyth has written a book to read from beginning to end – although you can easily start at any chapter you like because The Etymologicon works like a circle. Each chapter is linked to the next and that's one of the reasons the book is so readable. Mark Forsyth's conversational writing style and wit turn etymology into an entertaining pastime. On the last pages of the book, Mark Forsyth presents some quizzes to test the knowledge you acquired reading The Etymologicon. You have to guess the names of cities and famous people, and I can tell you this isn't easy but it's fun. If you are interested in the origin of words but you don't want to look them up one by one, I can fully recommend The Etymologicon.
