    Mend the Living

    31. December 2016 um 18:38

When Simon is declared brain dead after an early morning accident, it becomes clear that his organs could save lives if only his parents would approve. But there isn't much time to decide, organs deteriorate quickly and the clock is ticking. As soon as we enter the hospital, we meet all kinds of people involved in Simon's case. There is Cordelia Owl, a young nurse who is new at the hospital, Thomas Remige the organ donation specialist managing Simon's case, or Claire who needs a new heart. They all have stories to tell and Maylis de Kerangal stops for a heartbeat to give intimate glimpses into her characters' lives. She does it without breaking the pacing of her novel and every story fits like the piece of a puzzle.Mend the Living is set within a 24-hour time frame and tells the story of an organ donation process. This doesn't sound like much, but superb writing with long meandering, poetic sentences - that must have been awfully hard to translate from French - and great characterization and storytelling make this gripping novel one of the best I have read in 2016.
