    Great stories again

This time the Sandman is in real trouble. The little son of a young woman has been kidnapped and she is persuaded of the blame of the Lord of Dreams. In search of her child, she meets The Three Furies, whose duty is practicing bloody revenge without a soupçon of pity. And so their next object will be the Sandman...
But this is not the only story in this volume, which is at least twice as thick as the previous ones. Among other things, there is Lady Delirium looking for her dog; also there is Nuala and her unrequited love for The Sandman; we follow Loki's cruel fate and additional a young woman who is attending an acquaintance while a deadly disease – and to be honest: I don’t have any idea what kind of proportion is this tale to the main story. Like before at the last book I come to the same conclusion: I have to read the previous books probably once again ;-)
The stories are devilishly good as usual. However, this time I quarrel with the drawings. They are rougher painted than the previous images, almost in a sort of cubist way which I don’t find that appealing as a basis for a graphic novel. It would be wonderful if in the next volume the illustrators return to the old drawing style.

Rezension zu "The Sandman Vol. 8: World's End (Sandman Collected Library)" von Neil Gaiman

Charlene Mooney and Brant Tucker are going by car from Seattle to Chicago, when in the middle of a night of June they get caught in a snowstorm. The car gets out of the road and crashes into a tree. Brant frees the unconscious Charlene and drags her with his last strength back to the road, as he believes. But he has lost his way completely and they ends up in the inn Worlds End. There, it is been taking care of the injured Charlene, while Brant is supplied with food and drink. It seems to be a strange society whom they meet there: people who appear to come from another century, figures that seem to have sprung from an ancient legend, some creatures seem as if they come from a dream and so on. All they sit together and pass the time by telling stories. Brant joins them and listens ...
The six stories are of very different nature: fairy tales, legends, science fiction, adventure, intrigue - and one amazing than the other. Unlike the previous books of and with Sandman, this time he and his siblings only appear marginally - what the quality of the stories, however, not detract. Nevertheless, I have been missing him (so I award an asterisk less )
The drawings are congenial as before and their style perfectly match to the particular story.
I’m already looking forward for the next part.

Rezension zu "Sandman - Fables and Reflections (Vol. 6) (New Edition)" von Neil Gaiman

The sixth Sandman and until now my personal favourite!
It's not a continous story but rather 8 1/2 strips, including the short 'foreword-history'. More than the half of it base upon true historical incidents and life stories like Emperor Augustus, the French Revolution, Marco Polo etc. The others are predicated on old legends or myths, so throughout the whole readingtime I had the feeling, these are not just phantastic stories but they could have really happen like this. And in every event Sandman plays an important part.
Last but not least the pictures are again impressive as always. For every story there is a certain style (Ramadan - very coloured, like a fairy tale; Soft Places - almost paltry, blank spaces like you expect it in a desert etc.), which accords perfectly with the contents of the different tales.
Fantastic stories, amazing drawings - a great book!
