Wilde' s Drama „An Ideal Husband“ pictures husbands, their wives and politics in London' s society in the 19th century. The play is amusing with nice epigrams but sometimes it is too serious. The marriage and the political career of a distinguished English aristocrat gets in trouble, when a woman from the past appears. She wants him to change his mind concerning a political issue. A thing he promptly denies. But the woman has a letter in her possession, he thought it has been destroyed years ago. „Sooner or later we have all to pay for what we do.“ The play „An ideal husband“ has four acts and is completed within twenty-four hours. In this timeline Oscar Wilde portrays the infamous politics and the much more infamous husbands and their wives of London society. „Oh, I love London Society! I thinks it has immensely improved, It is entirely composed now of beautifful idiots ans brilliant lunatics“, „I don' t mind husbands. I have had two“, „Women have a wonderful instinct about things. They can discover eveything except the obvious.“ Just like in the play „The importance of beeing Earnest“ the main focus is on the fragile relationship of men and women. What makes the ideal husband and what the ideal wife? „Men can be analysed, women...mereley adored.“ But this play ist not so brilliant and funny like „Earnest.“ It might be, because of the detailed description of the characters which pulls down the speed of the play. Nevertheless the story has a clever plot, which gives the story often an unexpectable twist. „Truth is a very complex thing.“ Although the play is settled in the 19th century, the story could also be played nowadays. „An ideal husband“ has been adapted into several movies. And some of the epigrams became very popular. „To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance“, „When gods wish to punish us they answer our prayers“, „In this world like meets like.“ „What is unfashionable is what other people wear.“ Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) wrote in his short life several plays, short stories and just one novel. He was married to Constance Lloyd and they had two sons. But he also had affairs with men. He will be remembered for his flamboyant lifestyle.
