Insane dark powers, strong heroes kicking the bad guys' teeth in, heavenly forces behind imagination - for me, this could be the equivalent of paradise! I have a problem with short books, though. I've often asked myself how some authors manage to create the concept for a whole fictional world when they have only 100 or 200 pages?Well, "Gates of Heaven" by Pamita Rao, the first book in an upcoming fantasy series, is kind of a quick read and much thinner than the average books I read. But who cares about the length of a book when it's so damn exciting, incredibly well-written and has totally lovable protagonists? As a non-native English speaker, I find Rao's writing style very good and easy to understand.Alaira, one of the main characters, is the most lovable and the bravest sword-swinging young woman I've read about in a long time. The way she would do anything to protect her familiy and her nephew Neelahaim (Creed's kidnapped son) is more than simply heart-wrenching - it's the most wonderful thing in Creed's horrifying kingdom! Creed may the most evil king in the world, like if Sauron and Lord Voldemort had a child (which is basically impossible since they're both men but I'm referring to their nastiness and not their gender) - just that sort of e v i l.The story is really well thought out and I loved every page - except for the terribly mean cliffhanger that left me dying for more. Alaira and Neelahaim were in such great danger, I was hardly able to calm down until I knew they were safe ... and then came the last page and all I wanted to do was throw myself on the floor and cry! I totally look forward to the next book, but if there'll be another big cliffhanger ... Well, imagine a bomb going off. Yeah, that would be my reaction. I hate cliffhangers, but I love "Gates of Heaven".
