    Lost in the Labyrinth

Patrice Kindl's retelling of the Greek myth of the Minotaur in an attempt to reconcile archeological findings with the story but also enriching it with his own inventions has led to a captivating novel that is hard to put down. The heart and centre of the story is Xenodice, Princess on the Island of Kefti (ancient Crete) and one of the ten children of the powerful Queen Pasiphae. Xenodice is a young girl suffering from the cruelty of her sister Ariadne and secretly in love with Icarus, son of the inventor and artist Daedalus. She has a big heart and tries to protect her brother Asterius who - half man, half bull - is also known as the Minotaur and seen by many as a monster. The arrival of Theseus who claims to be a monster-killing hero threatens the peaceful life of her family...I love the elegant writing style of the author - dignified but not overburdened. It is a real pleasure to read and I felt like I was there, in ancient Greece, witnessing how this wonderful and yet tragic story unfolds...At the end of the book, there are the "author's note" with explanations on how it came to be written, a genealogy of the protagonists and some useful recommendations for further reading.
