Hiring a boyfriend for Christmas? What could possibly go wrong?

Derek is facing yet another Christmas where his life feels out of control. He has a new career that doesn’t feel like his, and parents who would just love to see him settled down. All he needs is a temporary buffer for the parties he has to attend, and for his parents to leave him alone. Enter, Luke.

Luke is twenty-thousand dollars short for the renovations on Halligans; his family’s bar in New York’s Financial District. A favor for a buddy has him agreeing to play the part of boyfriend to a guy with more money than sense.

But when the spirit of Christmas works its magic on the two men, and they begin to fall for each other, Derek runs scared, and Luke needs space.

It doesn’t matter what obstacles you throw in the way of love, or how much you run in the other direction, because, when you’re least expecting it, whether you want it or not, love happens anyway.

The full first half of the book is a confused blur. It does get kinda cute afterwards, but the plot is a confused mess.

    Love Happens Anyway

Derek, CEO of a big ad agency, needs a fake boyfriend to show to his parents and company Christmas party, since he made up this heroic firefighter called Marcus. Luke was an actual firefighter, but got injured on duty. To help pay for the renovations of his families bar he takes the job of playing Derek's boyfriend for a few dates.Ok, so, I'm clearly missing something. I pretty much do not get the first half. I don't get what Derek's problem is. At all. Not even after the whole book. I did not get why he needed a fake-boyfriend, I did not get why he acted the way he did. His parents seemed perfectly friendly, as did his friends and his employees where a bit stuck up, but he also never seemed to really just put down the law. I did not get what Luke saw in him, because Derek was really acting very weird, distant and sometimes pretty assholey. And then suddenly they where kissing and where attracted to each other and it came out left field for me. Like an equation that was wrong on any level but lead to the correct answer, I could work with the rest of the book, ignoring the fact that none of it had made sense before, but I did not get emotionally invested, even then. I was just too confused about the book to really try and get into it so late in the game.I kinda liked Luke, he's open and nice, Derek was pretty much an unknown variable, though he starts to seem like an actual person around the end of the book. Both seemed a bit flat to me, though. There were some backstory, but they never really felt fully fleshed out.I also had no idea what they see in each other. Well, Luke is essentially Derek's wet dream come true, and the book doesn't really seem to be able to concretely supply any more reason for the attraction than that, and I don't have any clue why Luke would like Derek. In the end, all is magically resolved by the last date, the parents don't make a fuss about the change in name, the company people don't notice much of it and all is perfect. The plot is essentially a hot mess. It certainly has some cute scenes, but it felt more like some fanfiction than a professional book to me.
