One might think, that a five and a half year old girl does not have any problems at all. Not if you’re Matilda, who has to deal with her gangster-like Father, her bingo-loving mother and her ignorant older brother. Though Mathilda is a remarkable child: Not only has she learned reading by the age of 3 years, she can also do the mathematics very well. When she gets to school, her teacher Miss Honey, with whom Matilda gets friends, recognizes her remarkable talents at once. Everything could be perfect, if it wasn’t for the Trunchbull…

Dahl wrote a lovely book about a child, that has to deal with a lot of problems from her early age on. A book, that tells the reader, that we should not underestimate nor overburden our children and that family doesn’t have to be necessarily the one you are born into.

Conclusion: It is a nice story, good written and easy to read.

Das erkennt auch ihre Lehrerin – Frau Honig, mit der sich Mathilda anfreundet. Alles könnte perfekt werden, wäre da nicht Mrs. Trunchbull…

Dahl hat ein zauberhaftes Buch über eine Kind geschrieben, das schon von frühester Kindheit mit Problemen aller Art konfrontiert wird. Ein Buch, dass uns sagt, dass man Kinder weder über- noch unterfordern sollte und dass Familie nicht immer die sein muss, in die man hineingeboren wird.

Fazit: Eine schöne, gut geschriebene Geschichte, die sich wirklich leicht liest.
