Inhaltsangabe zu „Grave Mercy: His Fair Assassin, Book I (His Fair Assassin Trilogy)“ von Robin LaFevers

Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf? Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.      Ismae’s most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?

Besser als gedacht, aber nicht gut genug.

I put off reading the book for quite a long time, thinking I wouldn´t like it anyway. I couldn´t bring my brain to picture anything else than lightly clothed nuns with battle axes chasing off bad guys the sucker punch way and seducing other guys, at times the same ones, the porn way. I totally blame the internet for that. Grave Mercy had some lacks. A lot of action had to make room for the romance part. So, while Ismae certainly was badass for a 15th century not-noble born girl, she wasn´t badass enough for me. If you introduce a world full of killing saint shippers, they could at least kick some serious ass. Ismae rather takes to eavesdropping and fortunate circumstances than real, impulse motivated acts. But at least we know from the second she meets Duval and describes his stormy grey eyes, whom her heart belongs to. The story is not as stealthy as its heroine. All things considered, I really liked the story, though. I´m all for political intrigues and the dangers of courts, even though every time I let myself think about Anne´s age I actually choked. Sometimes, history sucks. The story provides a solid plot, entertaining bickering and enough events to let one fly through the pages. Before you notice it you´ll be done. I came to like the characters, even though the ending didn´t do it for me. Some bloodshed I could´ve handled. I´m not sure about the next books, because once I´ve grown accustomed to Ismae, I didn´t want to leave her PoV for a apparently crazy girl.
