What is it with the combination of horror and winter? Take a good snow storm and freezing temperatures and you've already got half the chill...This book waited patiently on my shelf for some time now - I even took it with me on summer vacation but decided it was not the right time of year to read a winter-themed book while lying in the sun (though it would have helped with the freezing).Anyway, I really loved this book - great characters, great mysterious evil force, and a lot of action combine into the perfect reading while curled up with a warm blanket and some hot tea (a fireplace would have been the perfect final touch, but who am I to complain? Some candles also do the job quite nicely). While some other reviewers mentioned some Lovecraftian vibes toward the end of the book, I myself prefer an extraterrestrial explanation - some as yet unnoticed visitors from Uranus or Neptune would be cool. While it was obvious who would survive at the end, it was tough to see some of the characters go down during the story, especially the ending of the kids was a real low punch in the gut, and all the faceless children where totally creepy. I still wonder what became of them, if they still endlessly roam the woods searching for someone to tell about their constant pain. This was my second novel by this author, and again I marveled at his captivating and effortless writing style which held me glued to the pages from the very first sentence.Highest recommendation.
