White vs Black? Who's the bad?

Kurzmeinung: I like the characters and the story, even if it was too obvious in the end.

** spoiler alert ** "Half Bad" is the first book in the Half Life-Series by Sally Green.
I won this book along with others in a giveaway about 6 month ago, but didn't read it until now.

I don't know why, but I always thought the protagonist would be a girl. I was surprised when I found out that it is actually a boy, Nathan. Soon I was familiar with him and his family and situation. However, it felt all a bit forced, as if the only thing the reader should feel for Nathan was pity.
Not even a "real part" of his own family, later maletreated by Celia. It was too much, in my opinion, and not really necessary for the storyline or Nathans personal progression.

I like the storyline from when Nathan is on the road much better. Characters like Ellen and Gabriel are pleasant and a bit mysterious, as is Mercury. I always wondered if they were all on his side and made for a thrilling second half of the book.
However, I expected quite a lot of what happened in the end, it was very foreseeable and therefore not that well written.

The book starts with Nathans life in captivity. I was confused, because I couldn't figure that out then, but later it made sense and I understood the time leap.
The chapters are mostly short and easy to read, the story also is easy to follow once you're into the book.

The battle between the White Witches and the Black Witches seems important for the White Witches, but it's nice that the story also is about Nathan finding his father and finding himself. He was condemned to become a Black Witch (the bad ones, as seen by the White Witches), but what if the White Witches are in fact the bad ones?

I enjoyed the book, even if it has it's ups and downs and low points, but I felt entertained while reading. Maybe the second one will be more smoothly written :)
