Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite books. Jane Austen's classic has found many lovers over the years and even if my mom has never heard of the book, it's one of the most known and read stories.
Seth Grahame-Smith has written a ... can you call it parody? ... of the classic love story between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy who now not only have to deal with their families and feelings, but with zombies as well.
Pride and Prejudice has its lenght and I think that Grahame-Smith has done a good job in shortening the story, but keeping all the scenes in it. If you know the original story, P&P&Z will not be surprising for you. The zombies only affect a small part of the story and only one major character (I won't tell whom).
Nevertheless, I enjoyed experiencing the story in this new form and zombies are kind of fashionable now, even if Mrs Bennet might not approve of this.
Sometimes there weren't a lot of zombies for a long time and it just felt like reading the original story. But then Lizzy and her sisters would slash some zombies in combat and it would be nothing at all like P&P.
The characters are the same as in the original, but it sometimes doesn't feel like they are. Sweet Jane wouldn't have been able to kill anything in Austen's classic and even if I could picture Elizabeth killing a few zombies, her other sisters are also not the kind of people to go zombie-hunting.
And Darcy is way more cruel than I ever thought he could be. Poor Wickham.
One thing I also enjoyed were the pictures. Nearly every zombie-scene is accompanied by one and it brings even more zombie-feeling to the story.
But don't be fooled, the story is full of irony and spoof-y elements.
However, as a fan of the original story, Elizabeth and Darcy and yes, even zombie stories, as long as they are interesting and well written, I quite enjoyed this book. I mean, only look at that cover. Even better than all the P&P covers I can remember.
I give 4 of 5 brains and recommend this book to fans of Darren Shan's Zom-B books as well as Austen lovers.
