PEOPLE ARE CAPABLE OF ALMOST ANYTHING. ‘2016’s most talked-about new thriller’ Stylist ‘A twisty, utterly riveting tale that will send readers on a wild rollercoaster ride of emotions. Shocking revelations kept me turning the pages like a madwoman’ TESS GERRITSEN Fast-paced and addictive, THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR announces a major new talent in thriller writing. **** You never know what's happening on the other side of the wall. Your neighbour told you that she didn't want your six-month-old daughter at the dinner party. Nothing personal, she just couldn't stand her crying. Your husband said it would be fine. After all, you only live next door. You'll have the baby monitor and you'll take it in turns to go back every half hour. Your daughter was sleeping when you checked on her last. But now, as you race up the stairs in your deathly quiet house, your worst fears are realized. She's gone. You've never had to call the police before. But now they're in your home, and who knows what they'll find there. What would you be capable of, when pushed past your limit? **** 'How well do we ever know those around us? THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR will keep you glued to the pages in search of the answer. Even then, you'll never guess the truth...until it's too late' LISA GARDNER ‘Meticulously crafted and razor-sharp. THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR lingers long after you turn the final page’ HARLAN COBEN

I seriously don't understand the hype about it.

I was so disappointed about this!! There was such a hype and I was really looking forward to reading this book, but unfortunately it couldn't live up to the expectations. The story is rather simple: a young couple is at a dinner party at the neighbours next door and leave their baby at home, checking on her every half hour. When the couple return after the dinner party, they find the crib empty and their baby abducted. And then the boredom begins... Over the next - what seems to be an endless number of - pages, the couple grieve and get more and more agitated, frustrated with each other, desparate and just straight out annoying. Over the last hundred pages or so, the whole story as to who did what and why is revealed with what felt like way too many twists and of course nobody is innocent. The writing is rather boring, dry and I had the impression I was reading the first draft, rather than the finished, edited, polished version. It was repetitive, unimaginative, at times predictable and - oh!  did I mention boring?!   Sorry, really not a fan.

People are capable of almost anything True. I mean, take a look at the newspapers, follow the reporters in the TV and you can see a whole bunch of things you never believed people would actually do that. We actually know what people are capable of. But still, it's shocking to read about it.Same with this book. I litereally couldn't belive what happend, what some people are doing to each other. But I better start at the beginning. The story is amazing. Seriously, it was like doing a jigsaw with no piece fitting to the other one. There were so many details I couldn't put together. I had my theories and my suspects, but with every page the story became more and more twisted. It was great, the author played with me until everything and nothing seemed to be possible anymore. She created a really complex and well constructed crime that was difficult to untwist. The characters were great as well. Everyone had secrets and dark sides , non of them was easy to look through. They were all incalcualble. And I loved that. The story had so many possibilties, so many twists and surprises because of the well created characters. That's what a good thriller needs! And everything was written in such a good writing style I wasn't able to stop at any point of the story. It was so catching and addictive and I really needed to know what happend! The book was really really good and I loved reading it!If you love catchy and well written stories with (slightly) psychopathic characters - read it!If you love thrillers and twisted crime novels - read it! If you love books like The Girl on the Train - definetley read it! So yeah, great book, great way to spend you nights.

The perfect crime. Nothing can go wrong, it has been perfectly thout-out. But then, all is a mess. Anne and Marco are at a party at their neighbours’. Their baby daughter is at home, alone since the babysitter cancelled at short notice. But what can happen with the parents just next door and checking on the girl every 30 minutes? However, when they finally come home at half past one in the morning, the front door is ajar and the girl is gone. For the police, the parents immediately are among the suspects – and neither Anne nor Marco know whom to trust anymore. It soon becomes obvious that both of them have kept some secrets, but they are not the only ones with something to hide.Shari Lapena has constructed a thriller which really is worth calling it one. Dropping hints here and there you quickly realize that you cannot be sure about any of the characters and that there is much more at stake than just an abducted girl. New information every so often makes you reconstruct your idea of what really happened in that night. You have just finished adjusting your thesis and it is gone. Towards the end, an even larger conspiracy comes out which is a real surprise but makes perfectly sense. What I appreciated about the novel was not only that it could surprise me more than once, but especially the way the characters were drawn. None of the one-dimensional they all had different shades of good and bad, of reckless and compassionate which made them appear quite lively. The plot is very well constructed, it is full of suspense and keeps you reading on the find out what is all behind. To me, it was entertainment at its best.
