Ich habe das Buch auf Englisch gelesen und der Schreibstil ist wirklich wahnsinnig besonders. Er lässt eine ganz einzigartige Stimmung aufkommen. Devon als Protagonistin ist ebenfalls einzigartig. Ich kann nicht sagen, dass sie mir sonderlich sympathisch wäre, aber sie ist auf jeden Fall total interessant und sehr vielschichtig. Am berührendsten fand ich ihre Mutterliebe. Die Welt, in der Devon lebt, ist stark patriarchalisch geprägt und stellenweise hat mich das extrem frustriert. Und das Konzept des Bücherverschlingens wurde hier natürlich wortwörtlich genommen. Devons Sohn ist da die Ausnahme und man merkt deutlich, wie sehr sie das belastet. Von Anfang an ist die Handlung sehr spannend, vor allem da in mehreren Zeitlinien aus Devons Leben erzählt wird. Das Ende des Buches hat mich wirklich begeistert.

I espacially enjoyed the idea of where the book eaters and mind eaters come from and why they are here. It is a whole new concept that was a lot of fun to dive into. I also liked the criticism on patriarchy and the strong female lead characters. This book is full of courage and strength, of love and the openness to always be the one behind the steering wheel of your life, even if you think there is now way. How is power generated and preserved, and who has power and how can this be shifted? How important is the mindset and encouragement and friendship in this? 

I did enjoy this little snack book a lot. It´s ending suited me aswell.

In the end I was a bit undecided how to tell others about this book. The story so far is shortly told: There are six families living in England and Scotland who have special abilities. They don't eat like we understand they way of eating - the need books as food, just books - the Book Eaters. But some of them don't even have this ability - instead of books they need humans for food and these people are called Mind Eater. Devon, a young mother is on the run with her young boy who is a mind eater.

I really appreciate reading this book and after having finished it I understand the many good reviews in Great Britain and in the US, because it's really well told, it kept me awake in the late evening and I just wanted to know the ending. I loved how the author Sunyi Dean let the characters grow and most of all I loved the relationship between Devon and her son Cai. It's so sad, heart braking and also so strong that for me the book was absolutely unputdownable. I guess I read the last one hundered pages in less than a day.

Now I really hope that Sunyi Dean will write a second book. Thes story is finished, but there are severel hints that made me wish for another book in a series.
