Inhaltsangabe zu „Dead and Breakfast“ von Susan Scott

The old house was a steal, the young family simply couldn't pass it up. Sure, it was two hundred years old, but it was in fantastic shape. And it was a three hour commute to Denver for the husband's computer software engineering job, but he would be able to talk his bosses into letting him work mostly at home, and there were certainly enough rooms to choose from for him to find a nice quiet home office to serve his needs. In fact, there were enough rooms for the young wife to turn the huge pre-Civil War manor into the charming Bed and Breakfast she has always dreamed of owning. Enough rooms, she insists, to make the monthly mortgage payments as well as the operating costs of the inn itself. The husband doesn't want to move two hundred miles up into the mountains from the city, but he has no argument once the wife presents all the facts. Between them they have enough children to help her get the place set up and running by the end of the month, especially if her mother and sister come to help. It's a perfect plan. Perfect in every way. Except for the little boy who runs up and down the third floor hallway laughing and slamming doors--the little boy they can hear but cannot see. And the old woman they keep bumping into in the kitchen pantry, on the porch swing, and sitting on the sides of their beds in the middle of the night, whom they can see and feel, but cannot hear. And the young woman who cries in the gazebo as though her heart is breaking, whom they can neither see nor feel. The family react in a combination of ways--the toddlers are delighted with their new supernatural friends and the oldest teenage girl is sympathetic to their plight, while the wife seems to think they are demonic. She calls in an expert at communicating with the dead and helping them to move on from this world to the next, who unravels the mystery of the relationships between the three spirits living in the old house, and in the process, opens a door for a powerful demonic force to enter the family's new home--a force which will destroy them all one by one in an attempt to gain possession of their souls.
