As a big fan of the Hannibal Lecter series by Thomas Harris, I had to read "Hannibal Rising", even if I had read disappointing reviews about the story.
The book, published after "Hannibal" tells the childhood of the most famous cannibal and serial killer, from his earliest days in Lecter Castle in Lithuania during WW2 and his teenage years in France after his parents and sister have been killed during the war.
Lecter is probably the most interesting character in the modern literature and Harris has shown his literery talent in the previous books, but this prequel is disappointing and nothing more.
I really looked forward to this book and read it nearly immediately after the 3rd one, where I was left speechless after the epilogue.
I wanted to find out more about Hannibal and his character, what made him the person we learned to know in Red Dragon, The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal, but as soon as his motive was mentioned, it looked lame. Revenge. The most used motive in history and literature. Even I would have come up with something better.
It was interesting to read about Hannibals relationship with his sister, Mischa, because Hannibal never seemed like someone who would care about another person much.
He is also not as controlled as he is in his later years. You can see how much he must have changed, how cold-blooded he must have become, but that was obvious. Nobody would have believed, he was this way since his birth.
However, the development was described in a rather boring way and his first murders were uninteresting as well, not only aesthetically, but from their written form.
In my opinion, Harris shouldn't have written this book at all as it destroyed the picture I have of Hannibal.
Nevertheless, I'm glad I've read this one now that it is available, because I always would have wondered if I would have missed something about Lecter. Now I can say, that "Hannibal Rising" is not a must-read, more like a fanfiction, so I only give 2 of 5 stars.
