As DI Karen Pirie is charged with a cold case dating back 25 years, the kidnapping of the daughter of a very rich man and her baby son, she is not very pleased as she is already (without the knowledge of her boss) working on another cold case from the same year: A woman is desperately looking for her father who vanished 25 years. She always thought that he would have gone blacklegging during the Miners' Strike of 1984 which led to the whole neighbourhood giving the family a hard time and therefore she was not interested in his whereabouts. But now her little son is very ill and needs a suitable donor. And when she tries to find her father, she discovers that he was not among the men who went scabbing that night in 1984...An excellent mystery with strong characters and some interesting descriptions of the region (Wemyss Caves). With the theme of the miners' strike it provided me an insight into a not-so-long-ago chapter of Scottish history of which I did not know much. For me the story shows how important it is to always be honest and bear the consequences of what you have done and to do it quickly for if you try to cover your tracks it can only get worse...
