"Lord of the Flies" by William Goulding is a modern classic. I knew the title for a long time and I also knew, I wanted to read the book, but I didn't know what it was about :)

Story:
A group of young british boys has survived a plane crash and they stranded on an uninhabited island. With no adults around, Ralph takes the lead at the beginning. He wants to build a sturcture, to organize the boys to build shelters, find food and keep the fire alive. The fire, which is the only chance they'll ever be rescued. At least, in Ralph's opinion.
But the young ones just don't understand the importance of all these things, for them, everything is just like a long holiday.
And Ralph is not the only one who wants the role as a leader.

Characters:
Ralph is one of the eldest boys on the island and thinks more rational. His biggest fear is that the fire could go out and no one will ever know, they're on the island. I could identify with him, because he wants to sturcture the boys and keeps a clear mind (most of the time).
Piggy is like the good friend, who is always there for you and has good intentions, but no real opinion and who is more of a follower than a leader. I liked him and was sad to read, what happened to him.
Jack is power-hugry and was the most unpleasant of the boys to me. He gains a couple of followers and thinks, he is the king of the world, I mean island.

Writing:
I'm not sure if this is because English is not my mother tonuge or because I was a bit tired while reading, but sometimes I couldn't really follow the details and had to go back to the previous page od paragraph to reread what just happened.
The story was not very original, I mean, Robinson Crusoe is known by nearly everyone, but the boys and their struggling to survive were new and till the end I wondered, what would happen to them. We talked about this situation a bit in my philosophy class and I can't say how I would react in this situation. Furthermore, it makes you think how you would react.
Some scenes were boring, some seemed just like a repetition of a previous one and all in all, the book was nice to read, but it was also a arduos sometimes.

I give 3 of 5 fruits for the book. I'm glad that I've read it, because I think it's a classic, but I don't think I'll have to read it a second time.
