Evocative, haunting tale of love and solitude... "Butterfly Stories" is an exquisite, well hidden love story. William T. Vollmann manages to convey a tender account of a man's vain but all-encompassing search for the one person of all to love, even accepting to pay the price of life for it. Now, would the writer be anybody else than William T. Vollmann, this could easily and probably would go astray like just "another book about love". By plotting his story in the world of prostitution in South East Asia (Cambodia and Thailand), he, overgoing taboos wide spread today, tells a wonderful, fragile, affectionate story of love and loneliness. Yes, the scenes are partially sick, it's rather sad and dark, but nevertheless, "Butterfly Stories" is like one of those covered-by-dirt-of-age frescoes, once you start getting glimpses of what's under the surface, you see the magnetic, evocative, shining, plaintive beauty of this book. A magnificent novel by one of the most original writers alive today.
